Who may ascend into the hill of the Lord? Or who may stand in His holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart… Psalms 24:3-4 NKJV

Dirty hands

When a toddler has dirty hands but clenched fists, it’s almost impossible to clean their hands. In my opinion, clenched fists could signify

a. rebellion – I know my hands are dirty, but don’t want them cleaned

b. pride – I know my hands are dirty and can clean them up myself

c. ignorance – my hands are dirty, but not sure how to clean them up

Open hands

Today’s scripture explains that clean hands are one of the key criteria for fellowshipping with our maker. When we open our hands to God, it’s acknowledging that we are imperfect and need His cleansing. It’s in humility we open up our hands.

God is the only one who can cleanse us. He does so with the precious blood of Jesus (1 John 1:7). It’s important to explain the gospel to our children as soon as they are cognitive. This way they can be aware of the redemption through the blood of Jesus (Colossians 1:14). Thus, when they fall short or slip up, rather than trying to cover up, they will choose to boldly approach the throne of grace (Hebrews 4:16).

What next?

We need to encourage a culture of openness in our homes, where our children feel free and safe opening up to us parents. They should be able to own up to their mistakes and be willing to accept correction.

Above all, as parents, we must remember to always live by example; ensuring our hands are clean too!
