“… for it is God who works in you, both to will and to do for His good pleasure.” – Philippians 2:13 NKJV

The task

We often ask our children to complete tasks that we found difficult or unattractive to complete at their age, or even as adults. For instance, the act of teeth brushing is considered boring and sometimes gruelling. However, it has to be performed at least twice a day.

Pleasing God

If we struggle with certain tasks even as adults, we can imagine the level of challenge a child goes through.

Today’s scripture explains that it is only through God’s help that we’re willing and doing the things that please Him. He strengthens our will and then our bodies.

God has angels that are able to carry out His assignments (Psalm 103:20). However, it is a privilege that God can choose to use us humans to accomplish His will.

There are some good works that God has predestined us to fulfil (Ephesians 2:10). But it is only through Christ’s strength that we’re able to fulfil such assignments (Philippians 4:13).

Therefore, we must come to Christ in humility, to obtain grace to continue to be willing and doing the things that please Him (James 4:6).

What next?

There is strength in being open with our children.

We could let them know things we’ve struggled with in the past (as children) or in the present (as adults), and how Jesus has helped or is helping us overcome (Romans 8:37).

When done right, this should foster bonding and a healthy relationship with our children. They will also be encouraged to solely rely on God’s help to please Him.

Prayer Points

1. Father God, thank you for helping us to be willing and doing the things that please you

2. Holy Spirit, thank you for teaching me how to model to my children the act of solely relying on your help to please You

3. Lord, thank you for helping me to continue to choose the path of humility (James 4:6)
